The whale watching season marks a yearly spectacle, as these majestic creatures journey northward to birth their calves in the warmer waters.
From April through July, we’re treated to the sight of whales embarking on their northern migration. As the months transition to August through early November, the whales make their way back to the bountiful southern feeding grounds near the Antarctic. It’s during this latter part of the season that your chances of spotting adorable whale calves increase, making for an even more enchanting experience.
Here’s our Top 5 places for you to spot them on your next visit.
1. Bar Rock Lookout, Narooma
Kick off your whale watching journey at the iconic Bar Rock Lookout in Narooma. This vantage point offers a spectacular ocean view over the breakwalls and out to Montague Island. You will also get a lovely outlook over to Bar Beach and the Wagonga Inlet which displays a gorgeous visual palette of blues and greens. Settle in with your binoculars and witness the majestic humpback and southern right whales breach and play in the crystal-clear waters.
2. Burrewarra Point Lookout, Guerilla Bay
Spectacular coastal headland views await at Burrewarra Point Lookout. The lookout is an easy 10 minute walk from the carpark on Burri Point Road, where a viewing platform will reward with views over Guerilla Bay and looking north toward Batemans Bay.
The waters to the north and south of the point are protected by the Batemans Marine Park and designated as Burrewarra Sanctuary Zone.
3. Dalmeny Headlands
Dalmeny is at the northern end of Tourist Drive 5 which winds its way from the town of Narooma, past a string of beautiful beaches, and intersected by headlands offering 180 degree views and ideal whale watching vantage points.
The Dalmeny to Narooma cyclepath takes a scenic ride along the shores of the Wagonga Inlet and Mummaga Lake and offers magnificent views during the 21km trip.
4. Buranguba Montague Island
If you are looking for amazing wildlife encounters then arguably the jewel in Eurobodalla’s crown is Barunguba Montague Island Nature Reserve. Barunguba Montague Island is a sanctuary for wildlife.
Migrating whales favour the waters around Barunguba Montague Island for the abundance of krill. Spotting them is just about guaranteed during the spring migration season.

5. Carters Headland
Just five kilometres north of Narooma, Carters Headland at the northern end of Bar Beach is a popular spot for whale watching
Carters Headland is an ideal location for whale watching and spotting dolphins. Come here for the surf, the views (180-degree views as far north as Pigeon House Mountain on a clear day) and the chance to see whale calves frolicking out past the rocks.
