Each year, the waters off Eurobodalla’s coastline become a thoroughfare for migrating whales, providing excellent watching opportunities.
Eurobodalla’s whale watching season runs from September to November. During their southern migration whales are moving slowly and venture so close you can hear their breath as they exhale – scan the waters and you’re likely to be rewarded. Later in the season, female whales and their newborn calves can be spotted cruising, often just beyond the breakers. The pair of them travelling all that distance – one a giant of around 15m and possibly over 50 years old and the other a tiny 4m and just a few weeks old – is a symbol of hope and reassurance for the future.
Montague Island
Montague Island Nature Reserve, sitting just 9 kilometres off Narooma and accessible only by boat, is a haven for marine and animal life.
Montague Island is a whale watching hot spot and a sanctuary for a range of wildlife. It is home to NSW’s largest colony of Australian and New Zealand fur seals and one of the largest little penguin breeding sites in Australia.
A wide variety of birds from peregrine falcons and crested terns to silver gulls patrol the skies above Montague Island, while migrating whales favour its waters for the abundance of krill.
Viewing From Land
Best land vantage points around Narooma are Bar Rock lookout, Dalmeny headland and Carters beach headland at Kianga.
Further north, Broulee Island, Burrewarra Point at Guerilla Bay, Toragy Point at Moruya Heads, and South Head at Batemans Bay.
For those who want to get on the water for an up-close experience, whale watching tours depart from Narooma and are an exhilarating experience. Dramatic tension builds when a whale dives, the minutes tick by and cameras are poised, waiting for that explosive moment when a whale breaks the surface in a spiralling breach. Unforgettable.
Migration
Whale watching season runs from September to November.
The migrating whales head south from their northern breeding grounds to enjoy a summer of intense feeding in the Antarctic Ocean.
Humpbacks, southern rights and orcas can all be spotted during the migration.
Using the East Australian Current to conserve energy, the whales will travel more than 5000km to their summer feeding grounds at the edge of the Antarctic ice pack. In late winter the current flows towards the coast and the travelling pods are funnelled in close to Eurobodalla’s shores.
