Tourist Drive 9: Coastal Wilderness
Tourist Drive 9 Tilba Tilba to Pambula
Driving time: 1.5 hours one way on 90km of sealed road.
A great alternative to taking the Princess Highway through the Sapphire Coast regional centre of Bega when travelling between Tilba Tilba and Pambula. All main roads are sealed with great facilities and services at Bermagui, Tathra, Merimbula and Pambula.
Heading south from the Australian heritage listed villages of Central Tilba and Tilba Tilba, exit the Princes Hwy on Bermagui Road approximately 1km south of Tilba Tilba turn off.
The drive will take you through magnificent coastal forests before emerging onto Wallaga Lake and it's iconic one-lane wooden bridge spanning the large waterway, a popular fishing spot. Wallage Lake, the surrounding forests and mountains are a traditional hunting and fishing ground for the Yuin aboriginal peoples of the south coast and holds a rich spiritual history for the indigenous communities.
The road then meanders through more spectacular Spotted Gum forests and coastal bushland before arriving at the picturesque fishing village of Bermagui, the northern gateway to the Sapphire Coast and the Bega Valley Shire.
Spend some time in Bermagui browsing the fishermans wharf, shops and cafes. The Bermagui Beach Hotel in Lamont Street, boasts a magnificent vista over Horseshoe Bay. Enjoy a cold beer and soak up the scenery.
From Bermagui the road takes you south along a magnificent stretch of coastal wilderness, wild beaches and more dense forests. When you reach Tathra you can opt to continue south to Merimbula and Pambula or turn off to the major town of Bega and back to the Princes Highway.
